Losing weight via surgery will soon be an option for some Sheridan area residents.
Bariatric surgery will soon be available at the Sheridan Memorial Hospital.
It’s not an immediate weight loss surgery, rather depending on what kind of surgery one has, a patient can have their stomach altered in a way that it can feel full, although less food was consumed.
Another procedure involves having up to 70% of a patient’s stomach removed.
Doctor Josh Scott is a 1994 graduate of Sheridan High School and has experience with these types of procedures.
He says it’s time for patients to have that kind of surgery in the Sheridan area, but those that chose to have it done, have to commit themselves to different eating habits.

“Obesity rates have increased quite significantly over the past several years and our community here and Wyoming is no different. So I think there’s really kind of an unmet need in the community here for bariatric surgery. The surgery itself is like a 1-day procedure, but the weight loss itself after the surgery is really a lifestyle change.”
The exact start date of the bariatric services is to be determined, because a number of legal requirements such as accreditation, and education of staff still needs to be met.
