Johnson County is home to one of the most notorious outlaw hideouts, a remote pass near Kaycee and the Big Horn Mountains known as the “Hole-in-the-Wall.” Here famed outlaws Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch, the Sundance Kid , Harvey “Kid Curry” Logan and Jack Ketchum took refuge in a tiny cabin between cattle rustling and other criminal mischief. Eventually more cabins were built and even a makeshift corral was established. The Hole-in-the-wall was favorite winter hideout until it fell out of favor. The makeshift “town” is preserved at the Old Trail Town Museum in Cody, Wyoming, but many sightseers favor going to see the original pass by visiting Hole-in-the-Wall country near Kaycee. According to the Town of Kaycee’s website, the scenery “varies from rolling rangeland to red rock buttes to steep canyons and the view is always spectacular.”
