U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming praised TerraPower and PaciCorp’s announcement Tuesday to build a nuclear reactor in Kemmerer. Lummis said Wyoming powers America, and she’s excited that advanced nuclear energy production is going to play a role in Wyoming’s energy sector and economy for years to come. Lummis added TerraPower and PacifiCorps’ decision to build their new Natrium reactor in Kemmerer is a huge boon to not only Kemmerer, but to Wyoming’s and America’s future energy independence.

The power plant will be located at the site of the Naughton coal-fired power plant in Kemmerer. The power plant, which is operated by PacifiCorp subsidiary Rocky Mountain Power is set to close in 2025. The project is anticipated to employ up to 2,000 people during construction and approximately 250 once operational.  In June, Microsoft Co-Founder and Chairman of TerraPower, Bill Gates, along with Rocky Mountain Power announced plans for the project in Wyoming. Glenrock, Gillette and Rock Springs were the other three locations that were being considered for the power plant.
