Working with the Waste Reduction Work Group, Sheridan City Councilman Jacob Martin learned that many of the city’s pumpkins were being used as animal feed as opposed to being dumped into the cities’ landfill. Through this action Martin had a thought, how many pounds of pumpkins can we keep out of the landfill if we held a pumpkin festival to gather, use, and recycle the pumpkins?

After approaching the City Utilities Director Dan Roberts and Recycling & Solid Waste Coordinator Seliena Parker, City Council adopted a resolution that designated Saturday, Nov. 6, as the day the city would set aside for the inaugural festival.

Roberts and his team did the math, it is estimated that over 30 tons of pumpkin waste produced by Sheridan could potentially be diverted from the landfill every year. Martin is happy with the 12,000 pounds of pumpkin that will now go instead to the City’s compost pile. This Spring, residents can go to the pile and use the resulting fertile soil for their gardens and flower pots.

The event brought 448 Sheridan residents out to find fun and entertaining ways to use their former Halloween decoration. Pumpkins were smashed, flung in a slingshot, kicked along during races and involved in ring tosses to name a few of the games that were played.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse Program, Martin told listeners how happy he was that the event was so well attended while also helping the environment and finding positive ways to reuse the city’s pumpkins.

According to Martin, he has considered drafting a resolution to bring to the City Council that will make the Fall Pumpkin Festival an annual event for the City of Sheridan.

The City is continuing to collect pumpkins at the drop sites located at 1261 Highland Ave. and 165  E. Brundage Ln.
