The Hospital Board of Trustees for the Johnson County Healthcare Center have voted not to pursue a loan from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for construction at the facility.

At last month’s meeting, the board approved CEO Luke Senden to pursue funding through the USDA for the second and third phases of their upcoming capital construction project on the facility.

Senden explained to the board at Wednesday night’s meeting that because of requirements of the USDA for their loans, it would have been necessary for the JCHC to drop their current construction contracts and re-bid the project to be in compliance with USDA requirements.

That would mean possibly losing their contractor and backing the project up by months in doing so.

The board discussed their other option, which is to seek funding through local financial institutions.

Phase One of the project is currently underway, a roughly $6 million project that will construct new patient rooms and renovate existing rooms in the hospital and add a new nurses’ station, storage areas and support facilities.

Phases Two and Three, which the JCHC is seeking funding for, will renovate the clinic, physical therapy area and update other areas of the building for an additional $9.5 to $10 million.

According to discussions at the meeting, there is no rush to get financing locked up by going with a local institution, as opposed to funding through the USDA, and Senden will be inquiring about getting presentations from local lenders on their offers for financing.
