The omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus has been detected in 29 states, including Colorado, Utah and Nebraska, according to the latest from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
But the variant has not been detected in Wyoming, yet. Two weeks ago, Sheridan Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer Mike McCafferty said the state and the Sheridan Region will no doubt detect the variant in the coming days, but the hospital stands prepared.
Omicron has proven to be much more transmissible than the original strain of COVID-19. Currently the nation is still experiencing a spread of the delta variant.
In spite of this, case numbers in Sheridan County continue to decline. The CDC reports that 55% of the population in Sheridan County has received at least one dose of the vaccination, while 47% report being fully vaccinated.
COVID-19 Public Information Officer Jennifer Graves reports that Sheridan County has 23 active cases in the community, with only two lab confirmed cases and no probable cases reported since Friday.
Sheridan County has experienced the deaths of 59 residents from COVID-19 and currently six residents are hospitalized battling the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists Sheridan County’s level of community transmission of COVID-19 as HIGH.
