Longmire Days

In July of 2021, The Longmire Foundation announced that actors Robert Taylor, Katee Sackhoff, Adam Bartley, Bailey Chase, Louanne Stephens, and A. Martinez would be unable to attend the year’s celebration, but would be part of online and live streamed events.

The foundation said Longmire Days 2021 would move forward as a smaller-scale event, making the 2021 year an homage to the very first Longmire Day in 2012 when (Longmire author) Craig Johnson sat out in front of the Occidental, under the shade of an umbrella, and signed books for the fans.

Fans still made the trip to Buffalo and Longmire Days 2021 was seen as a successful event.

Delta variant and vaccinations

By mid-June of 2021, Wyoming, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana were listed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as being the states with the lowest vaccination rates in the country for COVID-19.

Only about one third of Wyoming’s population had been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, which had health officials concerned about the spread of the delta variant.

The Wyoming Department of Health reported that a review of more than 5,000 lab-confirmed and probable cases identified among Wyoming residents age 16 and older between May 1, and July 28, showed roughly 95% of the individuals did not report being fully vaccinated against COVID-19. During the same period, of the nearly 300 persons infected by COVID-19 who were hospitalized at the time they were interviewed by public health representatives, just under 94% did not report being fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The delta variant had reached Sheridan and the transmissibility of the virus caused an uptick in case numbers locally. Wyoming State Health Officer and Epidemiologist with the Wyoming Department of Health Dr. Alexia Harrist pleaded with Wyoming residents to become vaccinated saying, getting vaccinated wasn’t just about protecting yourself from the virus, but protecting others who cannot get the vaccine.

By the end of December 2021, 50.3% of Sheridan County residents older than 5 years of age report being fully vaccinated.

American bullfrogs

In August of 2021, Wyoming Game and Fish asked the Sheridan community for their help in the hunt for bullfrogs. The department had confirmed the finding of an American bullfrog at Kleenburn Pound north of Sheridan in 2018.

The finding led to a herpetologist to conduct a survey in the Sheridan region to determine if there were more in the area. That survey determined that there are large numbers of the American bullfrogs at Mavrakis Pond and several sites along Big Goose Creek.

An invasive species in Wyoming, American bullfrogs are native to the eastern United States. Wyoming lacks predators accustomed to feeding on bullfrogs and the invasive species can quickly overwhelm the area and put native amphibians at risk.

The Game and Fish have stated they will always take reports of sightings of the American bullfrog very seriously in the Sheridan area.

Game and Fish asks that if found, mark the location on a GPS and notify the department office at 672-7418.

Falcon Car Corp.

In June, Falcon Car Corporation announced it will develop a manufacturing plant to assemble Falcon 9X full size pickup trucks and Falcon 3B buses onsite at the future facility which will be located at the Sheridan County Airport Business Park.

The development of the primary site is scheduled to be completed by 2025 and will employ 260 workers.

Falcon Car is a DynamiX Energy Corporation owned entity. Falcon Car Corp. focuses on producing vehicles that are in demand today rather than future concepts.

According to a release, the Sheridan County Airport provided Falcon Car Corp. with the ideal location for the manufacturing plant. Located minutes from I-90 with rail services and aviation access, the Sheridan Airport Business Park also provides Falcon with direct access to Denver International Airport, essential for business travel.

According to Falcon, Wyoming is a great state for business as demonstrated by Sheridan’s recent industrial growth and its Made-in-the-USA initiative.

Falcon has secured an initial capacity building and permits to produce electric vehicles in the state of Wyoming with additional production capacity increasing to 30,000 units by 2026.
