During a press conference on May 25, as part of the Department of Veterans Affairs 10-year strategy to reduce veteran suicide, the VA invited innovators across the country to participate in Mission Daybreak — a $20 million challenge designed to help the VA develop new suicide prevention strategies for veterans.
Interested parties are encouraged to submit their detailed concept papers via missiondaybreak.net to the VA no later than July 8, 2022.
According to the VA Secretary Denis McDonough, the effort supports the goals of President Joe Biden’s Unity Agenda and aligns with the priority goals and principles of the White House strategy on reducing military servicemember and veteran suicide.
According to the VA Secretary, in the most recent National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report more than 45,000 American adults died by suicide — including 6,261 veterans. McDonough said the VA must use every tool possible to end veteran sucide, including cutting edge technologies like artificial intelligence, an example given by Veteran Affairs Executive Director of Suicide Prevention Dr. Matthew Miller.
