Yellowstone NP Might Use Timed Entry System When South Loop Opens

June 18, 2022

When the south loop of Yellowstone National Park opens, not everything will be accessible, and not as many people will be able to get past the entrances.

In a media statement, the Park says it intends to open the south loop sometime next week, Monday at the earliest.

Inspections are being conducted within the park to see what roadways and structures are safe to use.

Road crews are working on part of a road that collapsed south of Canyon Village on Thursday morning.

Those repairs must be completed before the south loop re-opens.

Park Superintendent Cam Sholly says when the East, South and West entrances open, visitors will probably need to reserve a spot on-line, rather than waiting in line outside of the park.

“Half the park can not support all the visitation, so we are exploring a range of options including some timed entry potential reservation type systems, that we would look to implement when the south loop is safe to open.”

Sholly adds it is unknown when the north loop of the park will reopen.

Multiple sections of roads are either damaged or have been destroyed by the flooding and it will require substantial time and effort to reconstruct or relocate them.
