Sheridan County Youth Livestock Sale 2022 Brings In Big Bucks

August 9, 2022

It was time for young stockgrowers to cash in on all their hard work raising that prize calf, pig, and sheep among other animals.

Monday night (August 8th) was Sheridan County Youth Livestock Sale, as stockgrowers auctioned off what they had, and used the money to either raise more stock on the ranch, go off to college, or invest and spend on other things.

Keira Benedict of Sheridan is a member of the Sheridan County 4-H and the F-F-A.

She says she’s auctioned off animals in the past, and at first it can be difficult to end that bond you have with the animal, but as you get more experienced, it becomes less emotionally painful.

“It was definitely difficult my first few years being a little 8-9 year old, but as you grow you kind of know what’s going to happen to the pig. While you still love the animals, you know you have to part, so there’s not as strong of bonds anymore, but you still love them just the same.”

Galen Chase of Sheridan is a regular buyer at stock auctions.

He says while the animals that won prizes during the shows tend to sell for more money, buyers will stick around to buy stock from young ranchers that are still learning the industry.

“Champion animals tend to sell in the beginning and tend to bring a little bit more money. Deservingly so. Those are presumably the best animals. We just try to support them, we don’t really have any criteria. Just those kids that sometimes towards the end of the sale, that may not have the champion animal, but obviously worked hard and still have an animal that deserves our support.”

Complete details and dollar amounts were unavailable at the time this story was published.
