Partial Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are still in effect in Sheridan County, according to
County Fire Warden Chris Thomas.
Thomas issued the reminder due to local Rural Fire Departments having recently responded to several trash fires that were in violation of the Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. These restrictions allow for trash fires outside of municipalities on private land, but only between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., in a container provided with a spark arrester, and located in the center of a cleared area fifteen (15) feet in radius.
According to a release from the county commission, fire danger continues to be High to Extreme, and there is still high potential for large fires in Sheridan County through at least mid-September.
The commission asks the public to be careful with anything that can spark a fire such as trailer chains dragging on the ground and sparking; parking over dry grass that can start a fire from the heat of a catalytic converter; welding or grinding; and fireworks, which are prohibited.
There are no restrictions on smoking, but smokers are asked to be careful where they smoke and to completely extinguish the burning material when done.
Fire restrictions will remain in place until there is sufficient moisture to keep the fire danger down for the season.
