For the past 34 years, the Fourth of July Fireworks at the equestrian center was an event that served as the primary source of funding for all the Big Horn Lions Club community efforts. With the event no longer happening, the Big Horn Lions Club began exploring new ways to continue to raise funds to support the greater Sheridan Region community.
While appearing on Sheridan Meida’s Public Pulse program, Big Horn Lions Club’s former president Ed Hawkinson and Program Chair Bill Rohrbaugh, told listeners that during a brainstorming meeting, Hawkins proposed the idea of a fundraising golf tournament.
According to Rohrbaugh, other ideas were explored but the golf tournament seemed to be a fun and exciting event to replace the fundraising efforts of the fireworks show.

The fundraising golf tournament at the Powder Horn will tee off at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in a scramble format. According to Hawkins, many companies and restaurants are providing gift cards and prizes for raffles and to auction.
Organizers are hoping to have 14 teams play in the event at a cost $75 for Powder Horn members and $175 for non-members, the fee includes 18 holes, a cart and lunch.
Contests will include 5-6 payout holes –longest putt or drive , closest to pin and 4 fundraising holes. Registration must be completed by Sept. 7.
In the past, the Big Horn Lions Club used the funds raised from the fireworks show parking for:
Scholarships for High School Graduates headed to college Preschool vision screening for public and private schools in the county Vision services for persons in financial need Funding school programs to send students to national competitions Supporting the Wyoming Girls School Maintaining the Mt. Hope Cemetery Kids Fishing day To support students athletic events
The tournament will pay out for first, second, third place and last place or “most honest” team, Hawkins said.
