A 40-year-old Casper man was sentenced to prison Monday in Fourth Judicial District Court in Sheridan for a number of crimes he committed last year in Sheridan. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.
Casper Man Sentenced to Prison
In March of this year, Daniel Lawyer was arrested and charged with two felonies; second-degree sexual abuse of a minor and delivery of a controlled substance to a minor. He was also charged with two counts of misdemeanor soliciting an act of prostitution. Lawyer, in July of 2021, drove from Casper to Sheridan and sexually abused a 14-year-old victim in a hotel room after the two had been communicating on Snapchat. Lawyer also sold marijuana to the victim and the victim’s 17-year-old friend. He later offered to pay the victim for sexual encounters, which elicited the two charges of soliciting an act of prostitution.
At a sentencing hearing Monday, District Court Judge Darci Phillips accepted the terms of the plea agreement reached with the State, and sentenced Lawyer to 5 to 8 years in prison for the sexual abuse charge, 2 to 4 years in prison for the delivery charge and six months for each of the solicitation charges. The two felony sentences will run consecutive to each other and the two sentences for the misdemeanors will run concurrent to the sexual abuse sentence and to one another. In total, Lawyer will serve a sentence of 7 to 12 years in prison and must pay a total of $875 in various court costs and fees. He was given 179 days of credit for time served.
