Advocacy and Resource Center observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 4, 2022

First observed in October 1987, Domestic Violence Awareness Month gives the Nation a chance to come together, speak about the many issues of domestic violence in their region and promote the efforts of the organizations and the people working so hard to advocate for victims.

The Advocacy and Resource Center of Sheridan assists victims of all violent crimes. Many of the people they work with are victims of family or Intimate Partner Violence. While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Executive Director of the Center, Yvonne Swanson told listeners much of her duties and those of her team, concern listening and empathizing with victims of violent crimes.

As federal and state funding cut back on organizations like the Advocacy and Resource Center, Swanson said it is the communities that continue to support their efforts to help victims.

This October, the Advocacy and Resource Center of Sheridan will host a series of events to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month and raise funds to continue the work of the advocates, helping men, women and children in Sheridan County who may otherwise face the challenges of domestic violence and victimization alone.

Swanson believes in having fun and sharing laughs while spending time together and raising funds for the center and encourages everyone to wear the color purple – the official color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5, Black Tooth Brewery will host games of Bingo with 20% of the card costs going to the Advocacy and Resource Center. Swanson suggests arriving early to guarantee a seat.

Beginning at 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. Friday Oct. 7, at the Ramda by Wyndham, Skits & Giggles  will offer local entertainment and laughs. Tickets are $25 at the door. Snacks will be provided and the event features a cash bar.  The events will also feature a 50/50 and Heads and Tails game of elimination with a prize.

The March Against Family Violence will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday Oct. 8, at Grinnell Plaza. The march will proceed up Main Street to the court house. Attendees will hear a survivor of domestic violence tell her story. And the Advocacy and Resource Center will announce 2022’s Advocacy In Action Recipient.
