The Sheridan Police Department has compiled Use of Force statistics for 2022, and discussed them on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program Wednesday.
Captain Tom Ringley and Lieutenant Dan Keller discussed what force is, and how it is used within the scope of police work.
Officers are trained to not use force in excess of that which is reasonable and necessary to protect themselves or another from physical harm; to restrain or subdue a resistant individual; or to bring an unlawful situation safely and effectively under control.
There are different types of force an officer may use including professional presence/verbal commands; physical force/empty hands techniques; intermediate force that involves the use of less lethal weapons until resistance is overcome such as a Taser, baton, or O.C. Spray; and deadly force when officers reasonably believe that the action is necessary in defense of human life.
Ringley talked about the use of force statistics from the Sheridan P.D.
Ringley added that the department prefers to use the “show of force/police presence” to get compliance in these situations.
