Hunter’s surveys provide vital information to G&F biologists

Many Wyoming hunters will receive a harvest survey from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department through email or mail.

According to Game and Fish Public Information Specialist Christina Schmidt, these surveys are mailed out annually towards the end of the hunting season and ask several questions regarding hunters’ experiences during the season this year. Some of the questions include, what species license holder was hunting for, how many days they hunted in the field, whether or not the hunt or hunts were successful.

During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Schmidt asked hunters to complete the survey even if they did not harvest an animal this year or get a chance to hunt.

Biologists collect the data and use it to estimate hunter success rates, harvest rates and also utilize the information to determine management decisions such as species hunt quotas, season dates or other regulations.

Schmidt reminded sportsmen and women that not everyone receives a survey. Because there are thousands of deer, elk and antelope license holders, only a percentage of that number of license holders receive hunter surveys. Schmidt said some hunters may have received the survey for many years in a row and may not get one in the mail. This simply means a hunter’s name was not randomly drawn this year.

All hunters with licenses for specific species; moose, bighorn sheep and black bear, will receive a survey.
