Normally the Olympics are held once every four years, but some special Wyoming athletes get to go for the gold every year.

More than 100 special athletes from the five northeast Wyoming counties are in Sheridan, to qualify for the state summer games, which will take place beginning May 18th in Gillette.

On Thursday (April 27th) athletes were competing in basketball and power-lifting at the Sheridan County YMCA.

On Friday (April 28th) it’s swimming at the Y, as well as track and field at the Sheridan High School Track.

Carrie Pilcher is the Northeast District Director for Special Olympics Wyoming.

She says the games are more than competition.

It’s a chance to meet and make new friends from other parts of the state and for the first time in a while, they will get that chance, now that the covid pandemic has passed.

“We’ve held smaller competitions. We kind of had some number restrictions and some rules in place where we were holding local competitions to keep people active without so many people and then our first full season was our winter games that we held just about 6 weeks ago in Jackson Hole, so that was our first state competition unrestricted that we could stay overnight since COVID.”

The rescheduled Jack-a-lope Jump is scheduled to take place on Friday (April 28th) at 1:30pm, at the Sheridan High School Track.

The event serves as a fundraiser for Special Olympics Wyoming.
