Time to change the tires

News – Sheridan Media

Although the weather can be somewhat unpredictable in the month of May, it’s time to get the snow tires changed.

Many people may have already taken the steps to change their winter tires over to summer or all-season tires. But if one is still driving on their winter tires, they may be shortening their lifespan, costing more money in the long run.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Wyoming Highway Patrol Lieutenant Erk Jorgenson was asked if now was a good time to get the snow tires changed on vehicles.

According to the world’s largest tire and rubber company, Bridgestone, driving in warm weather on winter tires will cost more money than changing them out and could compromise a vehicle’s performance on the road. Tire making companies offer different types of tires, made from various rubber compounds, for different seasons. The best option for residents is determined by many factors including climate, driving style, and performance needs.

Tread rubber of winter tires is considerably more flexible than that of all season and summer tires. That same pliable tread rubber that adds traction in winter will wear down quickly in warm temperatures, shortening the life of the tire. Summer and all-season tires are built to withstand warm temperatures, providing long wear life.
