Veterans Village to host fundraising ruck race

May 17, 2023

News – Sheridan Media

Veterans Village  – Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard Space Force (AMNACS) is raising funds to build a development community consisting of 50 individual homes for homeless veterans in Sheridan County, with the vision to be a physically, mentally and socially safe, independent living environment supporting veterans.

Although the original idea for the village came from Story House founder Sean Higgins, Veterans Village is a separate organization from the Story House Village, a 240 acre planned unit development.

In September of last year, AMNACS was granted two major gifts from the Roberts’ Family Foundation and the Homer A. and Mildred S. Scott Foundation. Each funded a third of the salary for a new, full-time, executive director.

The individual who accepted the position is himself a Navy veteran and married to a fellow Naval veteran. Veterans Village AMNACS Executive Director Stephn Nicholson appeared on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to talk about the goals of the organization.

Currently, Veteran Village is raising the $8.5 million the organization needs to build a road to the location and construct the facility.

To help with the fundraising efforts, Veterans Village – AMNACS is hosting a ruck race on Saturday, May 20 starting in Kendrick Park. Well known to servicemembers and veterans, ruck races are often used as a training event or battalion morale booster. Ruck races involve the participants carrying weighted backpacks or “rucksacks” for a predetermined distance.
