Treatment for PTSD goes virtual, and the public can see it for themselves

June 20, 2023

News – Sheridan Media

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has developed medical innovations for decades. Thanks to the minds that have worked for the VA, medical marvels such as the cardiac pacemaker, practicing clinical trials, standing wheelchairs, cardiac surgery, liver transplants and much more are now used commonly or commonly practiced today.

More recently, the VA has transformed the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and developed a new technique in the way veterans access and experience their health care through virtual reality (VR). Wyoming veterans will now have the opportunity to use VR headsets to test a wide variety of immersive experiences that can help them with suicidal thoughts, chronic pain, and PTSD.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Sheridan VA Health Care System Lead for the Innovation Program, Donnalee Burch and Salt Lake City VA Innovations Specialist Liz Charles invited the public to see and experience the latest innovations made by the VA during the VXR & Innovation Showcase.

Attendees will have the opportunity to see the innovative and revolutionary use of VR for the treatment of PTSD.

One does not have to be a veteran or have connections to a veteran to attend, all are welcome.

The Sheridan VA Medical Center also announced they will be simultaneously hosting a VISN 19 Innovation Showcase.

Veterans, staff, and community members will be able to see innovation projects that are changing the future of healthcare and talk with the Innovation Specialists from Sheridan VA Medical Center, Eastern and Western Colorado Healthcare Systems, as well as the Salt Lake City VA Health Care System.

The VXR & Innovation Showcase will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, in the Auditorium at Sheridan VA Medical Center, located at 1898 Fort Road in Sheridan.
