A man who was convicted of murder in 1982, and killed a prison inmate a few years later has died behind bars.
The Wyoming Department of Corrections says that 62-year old Scott Bailey, died on Friday, June 23rd at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison, Iowa.
In late November 1982, Bailey was convicted of 1st degree murder by then-Sheridan County District Court Judge Leonard McEwan.
Per his own request, Bailey was transferred to a prison in Minnesota in 1984, but was brought back to Wyoming one year later, after murdering an inmate and was subsequently placed in the maximum security unit.
He filed a lawsuit against the warden of the Wyoming State Penitentiary, arguing that being placed in the unit violated his due process rights and constituted cruel and unusual punishment.
The Wyoming Supreme Court struck down his appeal in 1987.
He was transferred to the prison in Iowa in 2014.
Per Wyoming Department Of Corrections policy, an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
The WDOC does not release protected health information.
