Working Lands Workshop featuring Nicole Masters planned for August

The Sheridan County Working Lands Workshop Series Planning Committee has announced the continuation of the Working Lands Workshop Series for 2023. 

 The 2023 event, which is scheduled for Aug. 8 and 9, will feature Nicole Masters, owner of Integrity Soils and author of For the Love of Soil (2019). Pre-registration is required through the Sheridan County Conservation District website (www.sccdwy.org).  Early-bird pricing is available through June 30.

According to a release, Masters is a globally recognized soil advocate and agroecologist, pattern thinker, author and educator. For over two decades, Masters has been recognized as a knowledgeable and dynamic speaker on the topic of soil health.  Her experience spans diverse sectors from community gardens and horticulture, to vermiculture, compost tea production and diverse multi-species systems. Her company, Integrity Soils, delivers coaching and educational programs to producers and organizations spanning over 24 million acres. Her book titled For the Love of Soil; Strategies to Regenerate our Food Production Systems showcases examples of the tools and principles producers are using to regenerate their soils.

The Working Lands Workshop Series is the culmination of numerous discussions and conversations with Sheridan County landowners interested in furthering their understanding on soil health, adaptive grazing, regenerative agriculture, and cover crops.  

“This workshop is the next in our series of events focusing on regenerative, resilient, and systems-thinking agriculture. Our planning committee is committed to bringing knowledge into our community to assist local operators find efficiencies benefitting the human, animal, soil, and water environments across our landscape.” Andrew Cassiday of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service said. 

According to the release, the 2023 Workshop is not intended to be an introductory course, but a chance to dig deeper into these topics. The target audience includes small and large acreage land managers, especially those with an openness to implementing practices to improve soil health, biologic function, and resilience to stressors, such as drought and invasive weeds and pests. Not only are healthy soils good for agriculture and food production, but also play a role in water and carbon cycles. Suggested preparatory reading and podcasts are included on the registration page and will be updated periodically. 

Master’s book is available through Sheridan Stationery and an audiobook can be checked out through the Sheridan Fulmer Public Library.
