Fire Crews Put Out Fire At Spring Creek Coal Mine Near Decker, MT

On Sunday, July 16th at 2:26pm, Goose Valley Fire was paged to a structure fire at Navajo Transitional Energy (Spring Creek Coal Mine).

Goose Valley Fire responded with their large structure engine.

Upon arrival, Goose Valley Fire was met with staff at the mine.

Firefighters had to climb to the top of this structure to put out a fire in a coal filter that was smoldering inside an enclosure.

Firefighters had to exercise extreme caution due to the possibility of introducing air to this enclosure as it could cause a sudden explosion with the hot gases, smoke, and coal dust inside the enclosure.

Firefighters eventually got inside the enclosure cooled and knocked the fire down.

Crews climbed 12 flights of stairs multiple times with air packs, hose lines, equipment, and other items that needed to constantly be taken up and brought back down.
