A change of plea hearing was held this week in Fourth Judicial District Court for a 42-year-old Sheridan man charged with multiple crimes. Pursuant to terms of a plea agreement that was reached with the State, Byron Williams Jr. pleaded guilty to felony child abuse and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance – marijuana. The plea deal recommends a sentence of 3 to 5 years in prison for the felony charge, suspended in lieu of three years of supervised probation, and one-year in jail for the misdemeanor possession charge, suspended in lieu of one year of supervised probation. The sentence for the drug charge will run concurrent to the felony child abuse charge.

The plea agreement is non-binding, meaning the judge, at sentencing, can reject the plea agreement altogether and the defendant cannot withdraw their guilty plea. District Court Judge Darci Phillips ordered that a presentence investigation be completed by Probation and Parale and scheduled sentencing for February 13 at 9:45 am. Williams’ bond was continued under the same terms and conditions that were previously set in Circuit Court.
