Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter Dog Lead Marcie Horsely and Cat Lead Sue Johnson made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss strays and adoptions over the summer season.

According to Horsely, adoptions have been relatively lower this year. Only 18 dogs found permanent homes this summer. Seven dogs were adopted in June, six in July, and only five in August.

The dog kennels are full at the shelter. Horsely has begun using temporary kennels located in the garage to contain the overflow.

The shelter keeps room in the kennels for stray dogs that find their way there. Horsely said this year she has seen many strays come through the door.

Many of these strays have concerned families that find them and take them home. But in almost half the cases, the stray doesn’t have anyone to claim them. To protect families with lost animals, the Dog and Cat Shelter will not post pictures of stray dogs on social media. Instead, calling into the shelter and providing the staff with a name and a brief description can quickly help to determine if a lost pet has found their way to the shelter.
