Pretrial Conference Held for Sheridan Man Charged with Sexual Assault

A pretrial conference was held Thursday in Fourth Judicial District Court for Jacob Meyer, who is charged with second degree sexual assault. It was determined at the hearing that due to the publicity the case has received, a larger pool of the typical 50 prospective jurors will be brought in for the jury selection process. An exact number was not determined, but both Sheridan County and Prosecuting Attorney Dianna Bennett and Defense Attorney Jeremy Kissling agreed that there needs to be anywhere between 60 and 75 prospective jurors summoned for the four-day trial that is scheduled to begin Tuesday, November 12.

Meyer was arrested by the Sheridan Police Department on May 6, 2024 for second degree sexual assault. Meyer, at the time, was the Virtual Learning Assistant Principal at Sheridan High School. According to court documents, on May 4, SHS Principal Scott Cleland contacted the Sheridan Police Department to report an alleged sexual relationship between Meyer and a student. The affidavit of probable cause states that a student had reported the relationship to Principal Cleland. The alleged sexual assault occurred at Meyer’s residence on April 19, 2024, when Meyer provided the victim with alcohol prior to committing the alleged crime.  Meyer and the victim had been in a text based relationship since November of 2023. The crime of second degree sexual assault is punishable by not less than two years and not more than 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
