The Brinton Museum Fall Into Art program on November 8 will feature Brinton Museum Curatorial Director Jochen Wierich who will talk about German-born American artist Winold Reiss (1886-1953) who is represented in The Brinton Museum’s holdings of art with 35 original Blackfeet portraits, 34 are from the Bradford Brinton Memorial Collection purchased by Bradford Brinton during his ownership of the Quarter Circle A Ranch in Big Horn.

He talked about a new pastel portrait that the Brinton just acquired.
Wierich added that Reiss is a fascinating artist who introduced a modern approach to Western art. He said that Reiss visited the Blackfeet people several times, and painted multi-generations of the tribe. “We can show a little more development of his portrait style,”
Reiss is considered one of the foremost painters of the Plains Indians, although he was a little later on the scene than George Catlin or Alfred Jacob Miller. His Indian portraits of the Blackfeet people are painted in vibrant, dynamic color in a style much different from well-known American masters of the 19th century.
When Reiss first came to Montana, the Blackfeet had been pushed off their traditional hunting lands and were just surviving.
Following the talk there will be a ticketed dinner in the Brinton Bistro. Wierich said that the chef will be cooking up a German inspired meal.
