With the increased snowfall, Elk Fire containment has increased to 97% today. With this and the removal of remaining heavy equipment, the Elk Fire closure area in the Bighorn National Forest will lift Saturday, November 9, 2024. Temporary trail closures will remain. If you plan to visit the Forest, please be prepared for winter-like conditions. Remember that wheeled motorized vehicles are not to be on designated snowmobile trails, which include many Forest roads, after December 15 annually.
Temporary closures on Tongue River Canyon Trail 002, Dry Fork Trail 004, Lake Creek Trail 006, Freezeout Trail 008, Miller Creek Trail 077, Smith Creek Trail 085, Dry Fork Cow Camp Trail 201, and West Pass Trail 428 remain in place. These routes will be closed until treatments can be implemented to reduce post-fire risks caused by the Elk Fire.
Expect delays on Forest System Road 26. Beginning Saturday, November 9, 2024, logging trucks will move log decks along Red Grade Road 26 west toward Highway 14 to the Copper Creek Gravel Pit off Forest System Road 652. This is a more suitable location where the logs will be out of the way of traffic and is a better place for commercial sale. Please use caution driving on the road and anticipate this traffic.
