At the December 11 SCSD#3 Board of Trustees meeting, Superintendent Chase Christen said that he and Mr. Spade, A/C physical education teacher had been working on continuing to help the students develop self-defense skills and confidence. “We feel this is important for our students to have,” Christensen said.
Two guests, Jeremy Williams and Brady McLean, talked to the SCSD#3 board about the benefits of offering a self -defense class for students and staff. They said they started training in jujitsu to learn to fight, but eventually the desire to fight went away as they trained.
Williams added that wanting to learn to fight will bring people in the door, and some people want to learn to fight for whatever reason.
He said the training helps to increase confidence in many other areas as well. He said he hoped that those he teaches never have to use the skills, never have to fight. He said they do give them the confidence to use the skills if necessary.
Christensen added this about the self-defense at A/C School.
He said the class would be every two weeks and be a part of the physical education class. He said the school would also have to purchase some thicker mats to avoid injury. “I think this something that will be positive for our kids.” Christensen added. “It’s not so much about defense, or even preparedness it is a willingness to approach life with a different stature.”
He said he hoped to have the self-defense teachers come out every other week and add the self-defense classes to the PE classes.
