What’s being labeled as a maternity desert, just got a little bit bigger in southwest Wyoming.

As of December 30th 2024, the hospital in Evanston discontinued its labor and delivery services, making it the 3rd facility since 2018 in south-central and southwest Wyoming to close down.

Rawlins and Kemmerer were the other 2.

That means there’s only Rock Springs, Afton and Jackson, for an expecting mother to go to in Wyoming, that’s west of the continental divide.

Sheridan Memorial Hospital CEO Mike McCafferty says the situation is being monitored, and although there’s nothing the Sheridan area can do given its location from western Wyoming, he explains why some hospitals have been having problems keeping their labor and delivery services department open.

“You want to make sure you have the right numbers of OB/GYN’s to be able to care for acute situations and surgical situations in the hospital, to be able to share in that responsibility. You can’t just have one person that’s on call 24 hours, 7 days a week and so you’ve got to have a team to be able to care for those patients.”

McCafferty adds Sheridan Memorial Hospital recently hired Dr. Steven Beverly, so the hospital now has 5 OB/GYN’s available.
