January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. The month is dedicated to raising awareness about human trafficking, which is a violation of human rights that leads to exploitation, violence, and corruption.

Executive Director and co-founder of Uprising, Terri Markham, made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to invite Sheridan’s parents and teens to a special presentation at Black Cat Boba that will teach teens how to recognize grooming and sexploitation through social media and gaming apps.

The presentation will be taught by teens who have worked with Uprising in their efforts to bring education and awareness to human trafficking in all its forms. The presentation will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Black Cat Boba in Sheridan.

According to the Child Crime Prevention & Safety Center, there are an estimated 500,000 online predators active each day and children between the ages of 12 and 15 are especially susceptible to be groomed or manipulated by adults they meet online.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, over 50% of the victims of online sexual exploitation are between the ages of 12 and 15.

Uprising works to educate children and parents of the threats of online predators and bring awareness to the realities of human trafficking. Learn more by clicking here
