Both U.S. Senators John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis issued statements Monday celebrating the Senate Passage of the Lake Riley Act. The legislation requires the federal detention and deportation of illegal immigrants who commit certain criminal offenses. Senator Barrasso said the passage of the Laken Riley Act with strong bipartisan support marks a critical first step in securing the border and making America safer and he is glad that it is the first bill being sent  to President Trump’s desk.

Senator Lummis said that after President Trump promised in his inaugural address to restore law and order at our southern border, it is appropriate that this the first bill heading to the president’s desk to be signed into law.

According to information from Senator Barrasso’s Office, the Senate amended the bill with amendments from Senator John Cornyn of Texas and Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa. The Cornyn amendment requires detaining illegal immigrants who attack law enforcement officers. The Ernst amendment – also known as Sarah’s Law – requires detaining illegal immigrants who commit murder or cause serious bodily injury.

Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student, was murdered by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela on February 22, 2024 while she was jogging on the University of Georgia campus.
