The upcoming month of February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. This month is a time to raise the nation’s awareness about teen dating violence and promote safe, healthy relationships.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Sheridan Advocacy and Resource Center Advocate Brittney Hamiltion spoke on the conversations and presentations she and other advocates like to have while visiting Sheridan County schools.

Boundaries are healthy limits that define what behaviors are acceptable and help maintain balance in relationships. There are physical boundaries that teens can set on personal space and physical touch. Emotional boundaries on what each person in the relationship is responsible for feeling. And there are time boundaries on how much time and energy teens invest in a relationship or activity.

According to Youth.gov, nationwide, youth age 12 to 19 experience the highest rates of rape and sexual assault. Studies show that approximately 10% of adolescents report being the victim of physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner during the previous year.

Girls are particularly vulnerable to experiencing violence in their relationships and are more likely to suffer long-term behavioral and health consequences, including suicide attempts, eating disorders, and drug use.
