The Powder River Ranger District in the Bighorn National Forest (BHNF) will be getting a new District Ranger.

In a release from Sara Evans Kirol, Public Affairs Specialist with the BHNF, it was announced that John Wallace will be returning to the Bighorn National Forest where he will serve as the new Powder River District Ranger in Buffalo.

Wallace previously worked as the acting timber program manager in 2018 on the Bighorn National Forest and as an acting district ranger in 2021 on the Powder River Ranger District.

Andrew Johnson, Bighorn National Forest Supervisor, said “John will bring a strong natural resource management background to the Forest. His experience working with partners and local communities will also be a benefit to the Bighorns and the people we serve.”

Wallace is currently the Emmett District Ranger on the Boise National Forest in Idaho.

Matt Enger, acting district ranger will continue to cover the Powder River Ranger District until Wallace arrives at the end of February.

Bill Novotny, Johnson County Commission Chairman and county liaison to the US Forest Service, said “I am very pleased the Forest Service recognized the importance of having a local decision maker in place for the Powder River Ranger District.  I look forward to working with John and readdressing the vegetation management plan for the Pole Creek Recreation Area and the ongoing issues with dispersed camping.”
