Senior cats are often overlooked

Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter Cat Lead Sue Johnson made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse asking the public to consider giving a home to a few senior cats. 

Adopting senior cats (7 years or older) has many benefits. Older cats’ temperaments and behaviors are not a guessing game as their personalities are already well developed. They are also well-adapted to the use of a cat box. Older cats can still learn as well and adapt well to a new home. 

Currently, The Dog and Cat Shelter has a few senior cats available for adoption that are unfortunately often passed by due to their age.

Johnson said she often feeds the senior cats a diet higher in protein to prevent muscle loss. Some older cats do require medications to remain active and regular visits to a veterinarian will keep senior cats healthy and happy. 

Johnson said some do remain quite active and others simply wish to sit on a lap and enjoy their golden years. It is recommended to take some time and get to know the senior cats at the shelter before adoption to ensure a right fit with the family or for yourself.
