The WYO Performing Arts and Education Center and the Civic Theatre Guild will present this year’s co-production and adaptation of Stephen King’s “Misery.”

“Misery,” is a play based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. The story follows best-selling romance novelist Paul Sheldon who survives a brutal car crash — only to be “rescued” by his number one fan, Annie Wilkes. But when she reads his latest book and discovers her beloved Misery Chastain has met an untimely end, Annie’s devotion takes a dark and deadly turn. Now, Paul must write for his life.

Civic Theatre Guild Board President and Director Aaron Odom said transferring the horror genre to the theatrical stage presents more challenges than other subjects. But the experience is well worth the effort by the cast and crew for the audience.

Jennifer Smith plays Annie Wilkes. The character is seen at the beginning as a heroine, but a disturbing obsession soon begins to surface. Smith worked to find the human side of Annie. But Smith has played many character parts in the past, giving her the talent to show a streak of terror hidden underneath.

JJ Reign plays Paul Sheldon, the author who through a turn of events finds himself at the mercy of his number one fan. Reign worked in rehearsals to develop a technique that will keep audiences beside Paul, as the reality of his situation begins to become one of fear.

David Britton plays the role of Sheriff Buster. Although the role may appear smaller, Britton said he instantly understood the critical part of the story that role plays.
