The Fifth Annual Sheridan Rotary Ice Fishing Derby was held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Lake DeSmet. The warm weather and good ice on the lake brought out a record-breaking total of 327 anglers on the Lake, hoping for the longest fish, in three categories, worth $1000; a tagged fish worth $250, or the grand prize of $2500.

The largest fish of the day was the 28 1/2-inch brown trout, which weighed 8.50 pounds, and was caught by Derek Clements, and it earned him $1000. Clements was eligible for the $25,000 prize but did not win. the last two digits of his fish’s weight was .50 and the predetermined numbers were .37.

In the trout category, in addition to Clements catch, 2nd place went to Greg Townsend with a 24 ¼ inch fish, which won him $300; and 3rd and $200 went to Kyle Boyd with a 24-inch fish.

In the Perch category, 1st, 2nd and 3rd places all went to Wyatt Wittkop. The three fish at 8 7/8, 8 ½ and 8 ¼, earned him $1500.

There were some winners in the other fish category, Chad Sommers took the first place with a 22 ¼-inch carp $1000; second to Morgan Refle with a carp that measured 18 1/4 inches $300 and to James Vine with a 16-inch sucker, $200

Dallas Brown won the Ruger 10/22 donated by Cornerstone Pharm and Arms (market value $369)

The derby had 327 registered anglers and raised over $35,000 for the Sheridan Rotary Foundation.

David Alden, Rotary Foundation, talked about where the money will go.

The Rotary Interact Club of young people again sold lunch at the derby and raised over $600. “They had a great day,” Alden said.
