The Wyoming Game and Fish Department reports wildlife managers successfully immobilized a deer in Sheridan and removed a large plastic lid from its neck on March 11.

According to the Department, the deer, an adult mule deer doe, was first reported to Game and Fish on Jan. 27. Her condition and whereabouts were reported almost daily by concerned citizens in the North Heights neighborhood. Personnel monitored the deer multiple times a week for several weeks. Because the deer was uninjured and able to feed and move unimpeded, the decision was made to watch it to see if the lid came off by itself.

“Immobilizing an animal is a risky venture and should only be considered as a last resort,” Sheridan Region Wildlife Coordinator Tim Thomas said. “Immobilizing an animal takes several hours and attempting to do so during recent sub-zero temperatures would have endangered the deer.”

The effects of the immobilization drugs can take several hours to wear off and the animal must be in a secure location where its body temperature can be maintained in a safe range and other vital signs monitored.

The deer was immobilized at approximately 1:30 p.m. in the North Heights neighborhood. Personnel removed the lid from her neck and examined her for wounds. She was found to have no injuries and be in good physical condition. Personnel remained with the deer for more than three hours until she was recovered and able to move off.

Reports of injured wildlife can be made to the Game and Fish Sheridan Regional Office during regular business hours or to the Stop Poaching Hotline at 877-WGFD-TIP 24 hours a day.
