Tongue River Fire Department, with support from Dayton Fire, responded to a grass fire on Monarch Road near the Walk-In access area provided by the landowner.
The departments were dispatched at 8:44 PM on March 28, 2025, and arrived quickly to contain the blaze.
The fire rapidly grew to approximately 5 to 10 acres before being brought under control.
It was determined to have been caused by the illegal use of fireworks.
Those responsible fled the scene, but not before prompting the unnecessary use of fire equipment and personnel.
Fortunately, no structures were threatened, and the burn area remained relatively small.
Fire Chief Jeff Barron reminds residents that, until green-up occurs, area grasses remain extremely dry—mirroring conditions from last October when the Elk Fire scorched large portions of the local landscape.
“Fireworks are not permitted outside of designated times set by Sheridan County,” said Chief Barron. “We urge everyone to exercise caution and avoid any activities that could ignite a fire. The risk is simply too high.”
The fire serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing danger and the importance of responsible behavior in fire-prone areas.
