Junior High and High School Students at A-C School on Wednesday attended a “Hang up and Drive” program, which is geared to educate drivers across the country and the world about the dangers of phone use behind the wheel.

Steve Johnson and Jacy Good, husband and wife team from upstate New York, are public speakers and advocates for phone-free roads. In 2008, Jacy miraculously recovered from a car crash that claimed the lives of both her parents and left her partially paralyzed. The crash was caused by a young driver who had been distracted using his cell phone.

Loyce Ellingrod, A-C Guidance Counselor and advisor, talked about the bringing the program at A-C.

Janet Dunn, Wyoming State Coordinator of SADD, attended the event as well.

Steve Johnson started the talk.

Jacy started her talk with a look back to her childhood in farm country in Pennsylvania She said her and her brother had an incredible childhood. She said she wanted to go to college, and had to get scholarships to help pay for it. She met Steve when she was in college, and they have been together since then.

The day she graduated, Jacy and her family were in a horrific car crash. For several weeks it was touch and go with Jacy. She had about a 10% chance of living through that first night. She did recover, and four months later moved back home, which was her parents’ house. She said that was when everything hit her. She said she goggled her own name and found the news story about the crash.

Jacy added that the paramedics arrived within minutes, and there was a trauma center not far away, which was very lucky for her and was probably the reason she is alive today.

Steve talked about some statistics about talking on a cell phone while driving, and how it takes ones attention away from the road. He added that music while driving or talking to another person in the car is different than talking to someone that one can’t see on a phone.

“There is no good safe way to talk on a cell phone while driving,” Steve said. “This is the #1 problem on roads all around the world.”

There is a website, Hang Up And Drive, for more information about Jacy Good and Steve Johnson and what they are doing to bring awareness to the problem. They can be booked for speaking engagements.
