Winter roads and seat belts: HP speaks on safety

Wyoming Highway Patrol Lieutenant Erik Jorgensen called into Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to report outside of a few incidents and some tough storms, the winter went well on the highways and Interstate.

Jorgensen said that more often than not, most seat belt violations he and the HP have to issue are to Wyoming residents. When asked why they choose not to wear the seat belt, many cite the freedom of choice not to do so.

According to The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,50% of Passenger Vehicle Occupants killed in 2022 were unrestrained.

Many Americans understand the lifesaving value of the seat belt – the national use rate was at 91.2% in 2024.
