A Sheridan man was sentenced in Fourth Judicial District Court Thursday on three charges pertaining the sexual abuse of a minor. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.
District Court Judge Ben Kirven accepted the terms of a plea agreement reached between the State and the defendant and sentenced 38-year-old Luke Cooley to 15 to 20 years in prison for the charge of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree; 7 to 15 years for sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree; and 5 to 10 years for sexual exploitation of a child. The sentences will run concurrent to one another, meaning Cooley will serve not less than 15 and not more than 20 years in prison. Judge Kirven ordered Cooley to pay $675 in court costs and assessments and said that he would be given credit for 70 days of presentence confinement.
During Thursday’s hearing, the victim read an impact statement where she said Cooley used manipulation tactics and groomed her to get what he wanted and that she has lost her self-worth and self confidence. The crimes occurred between September, 2022 and May 2024. Cooley began sexually abusing the victim when she was 15-years-old.
