Wyoming’s population is not increasing as much as the rest of the US, but the northeast part of the Cowboy State is seeing its numbers go up.
According to the latest population estimate from the Wyoming Economic Analysis Division, between July 1st 2023 to July 1st 2024, the state’s population increased to 587,618 residents.
That’s an increase of more than 2,500 residents or 0.4% compared to the same time frame from 2022 to 2023.
The growth rate for the US was at 1.0%.
Sheridan County saw an estimate of nearly 400 residents, or a 1.2% increase, and the estimated population as of July 1st, 2024 is at almost 33-thousand.
The 1.2% increase is the second biggest increase in the state, behind Crook County, which was at 2.4%.
Johnson County’s numbers barely changed and is up 11 residents, to a little more than 88-hundred.
When the division puts together its estimates, natural change and net migration are the two factors used.
Natural change is the number of births minus the number of deaths, while net migration is the number of residents who moved in and out of each county, as well as in and out of the state.
From 2014 to 2019, Wyoming went through 6 consecutive years of negative net migration, because of the economic downturn, and the division says the trend has reversed itself since.
Between the time of the last US Census numbers as of April 1st, 2020, and July 1st 2024, Sheridan County has seen an estimated increase of more than 2-thousand residents, which is a 6.6% increase.
