News – Sheridan Media

The mission of the Sheridan Chess Association is to promote education, events, and general interest in chess and to encourage the growth and development of critical thinking in young minds and to empower people, enrich lives, and enhance communities through chess.

SCA members Rebecca Marquez and Brian Kuehl made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to announce two events hosted by the SCA.

Tonight at 5 p.m., Grandmaster Luca Budisavljev, Serbia’s youngest Grandmaster, current Pan-American Collegiate Champion, and World Juniors Bronze medalist for the past two years, will challenge 30 players to play 30 simultaneous games.

Kuehl said these will all be happening at the same time and Budisavljev will more than likely win each one.

The SCA holds Sheridan Weekly Chess beginning at 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. at Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library. Free Open Chess Play for all ages, the nights also include free pizza courtesy of Powder River Pizza.

These weekly chess competitions involve learning and chess discussions and have greatly increased the membership of the association, especially among Sheridan’s youth chess players. The SCA has also worked with the Fulmer to expand the chess related material at the library. This massive effort has created one of the largest collections of chess related literature in the county, right here in Sheridan.

These efforts by the SCA have caused chess players, Grandmasters and organizers to recognize Sheridan as a location of serious players. Marquez and the other members of the SCA are inviting folks out to the tournament to not only play, but to spectate.
