On Tuesday, May 13, SCSD#2 will hold a roundtable discussion for community members and SCSD#2 staff on HB 172 which repealed the gun free school zones. There will also be discussion on a policy that SCSD#2 will be drafting to address concealed carry, and how much training the school can require for those staff and/or school volunteers who wish to have concealed weapons at the school.
At the Monday, May 5 board meeting, there was a discussion about drafting the policy, and Board Chairman Shane Rader added this,
School boards can draft a policy that would be specific to the requirements to get a concealed carry permit. “Right now that threshold is extremely low,” Superintendent Scott Stults said. The policy would state what additional training may be mandatory for those with the permit.
He added that open carry would not be allowed in the school.
The board appreciates the input from the community on this subject.
