A motion hearing for a Sheridan man charged with two counts of felony sexual assault was held Tuesday in Fourth Judicial District Court. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.

Motion Hearing

In November of 2024, Hunter Weiss was arrested by the Sheridan Police Department for two counts of felony sexual assault. On December 17, 204 Weiss, at an arraignment hearing in District Court, pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual assault in the first degree and one count of sexual assault in the third degree. Both of the alleged crimes occurred on December 25, 2022 when Weiss was an employee of Volunteers of America Northern Rockies and was transporting a female VOA resident to the Emergency Room to be treated for a urinary tract infection. Weiss allegedly pulled the vehicle over before arriving at the hospital and sexually assaulted the woman.

A hearing Tuesday in District Court was held to address three motions to quash subpoenas requested by the defense that were directed to VOA, the Wyoming Department of Corrections and the Wyoming Probation and Parole Board. The subpoenas being sought by the defense were for any and all records of the victim from the aforementioned agencies. District Court Judge Darci Phillips ruled in favor of the motions to quash all three subpoenas, essentially invalidating the subpoenas.

A Notice of Intent from the prosecution to introduce certain evidence at trial was also addressed at Tuesday’s hearing. Judge Phillips said that she would take the matter under advisement and issue a ruling at a later date. Phillips also set a June 20 deadline for legal counsel to submit supplemental briefings to the Court. A jury trial in the case against Weiss is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 18. Sexual assault in the first degree is punishable by not less than five and not more than 50 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Sexual assault in the third degree is punishable by not more than 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
