Bighorn Trail Run Participants Not Deterred By Damage Caused By Elk Fire

Although some of the Bighorn Mountain scenery was damaged because of last year’s Elk Fire, the race is still on for Ultra Marathon Enthusiasts.

The Bighorn Trail Run will take place this year, as runners are preparing for their 18, 32, 52 or 100 mile trek through the various trails and down the eastern slope of the Bighorn Mountains towards Scott Park in Dayton.

The 100 mile race starts at 9am Friday, June 20th at the Tongue River Canyon Campground.

Organizer Michele Maneval says last year’s fire has not deterred runners from signing up for this year’s event and all spots for all races have been filled.

“I’ve been out on the course a few times to help a few aid stations get ready and there’s definitely damage and you can see it, but it’s less than expected. After watching the mountain burn the way we did and then going up there now, it’s like ‘oh yeah, I can tell that the fire came through here, but it’s less than expected.’”

The other 3 races all start on Saturday.

The 52-mile race starts at 5am from the Jaws Trailhead area off of US Highway 14A.

The 32 and 18 mile races start at 6 and 10am respectively from the Dry Fork area near Burgess Junction.
