A November trial date was set Tuesday in Fourth Judicial District Court for a Sheridan man facing multiple charges. At the arraignment hearing, 25-year-old Nathan Gainforth pleaded not guilty to the charges of aggravated assault and battery and domestic battery. District Court Judge Darci Phillips scheduled a three-day jury trial to begin on November 17. A pretrial conference will take place at 11 am on October 23. A motion by the defense to lower Gainforth’s $20,000 cash only bond to a $10,000 cash or surety bond was denied by the Court due to the defendant’s extensive criminal history.

According to court documents, Gainforth was arrested and charged with the crimes for an incident that occurred at a residence in Sheridan on May 21 where he allegedly held a box cutter to a female individual’s throat and threatened to kill her. Gainforth is alleged to have struck the victim in the face as well, resulting in bruising.

Aggravated assault and battery is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Misdemeanor domestic battery is punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $750, unless it is the second offense of similar nature within five years, then it is punishable by up to one-year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
