Sheridan Memorial Hospital Director of Patient Experience Kelly Lieb and Trauma Coordinator Toni Schoonover made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss the formation of a Patient and Family Advisory Council at the hospital.
A Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) is an organized group of patients, family members, and caregivers who partner with a healthcare organization to improve the quality and safety of care. These councils provide feedback and guidance to the organization on various aspects of the patient and family experience, ensuring that the patient’s voice is heard and considered in decision-making processes.
Still in development, Lieb and the team at SMH felt the acronym PFAC failed to fully encompass the goals they hope to achieve. Instead, they developed the VOICE.

According to SMH, this focus on collaboration, transparency and mutual respect helps ensure the care provided at SMH is not only clinically excellent but also responsive to the emotional, cultural and practical needs of the people they serve.
Lieb said over the years, SMH has offered various ways to encourage open communications and transparency for staff members, patients and families to voice concerns, grievances or comments. But the development of VOICE goes a step further—offering true collaboration among everyone involved to build on the already patient-centered system of care practiced at SMH.

The next step in development of VOICE involves you. SMH is actively seeking individuals who have had recent care experiences at the hospital in any setting, either as patients or family members, as well as hospital healthcare providers, administrators and staff.
Lieb and the team are specifically looking for individuals who:
- Feel comfortable sharing ideas and personal experiences in a group setting.
- Bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives, and demonstrate respect for different viewpoints.
- Can commit to regular monthly meetings for at least a one-year term.
- Support Sheridan Memorial Hospital’s mission to “serve our community with excellent, patient-centered care.”
- Are passionate about making a positive difference in healthcare.
