Sheridan County Sheriff Levi Dominguez is warning the public about a scam involving fraudulent emails that appear to be from PayPal.

According to Dominguez, the scam has circulated in previous years and appears to be resurfacing, based on recent reports to his office.

In some cases, individuals unfamiliar with PayPal have shared sensitive personal or financial information out of fear of identity theft, mistakenly believing they were receiving help.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that in January 2024, a victim lost approximately $130,000 after receiving what looked like a legitimate PayPal invoice via email. The invoice referenced purchases the victim did not make and included a fake customer service number for disputing the charges.

The victim called the number and was connected with scammers posing as PayPal representatives, bank officials, and even government agents. These individuals claimed the victim was entitled to a refund and directed her to fill out an online form—likely giving them remote access to her computer.

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office retains information on the many techniques scammers use to gain access to your funds and identity. If you feel you are involved in a possible scam, contact the Sheriff’s Office and keep scammers from making you a victim.
